From Margins to Momentum: AI4PEP’s Leadership in Responsible AI for Health Recognized at UNGA79

How the Global South is Redefining Health Innovation Through Responsible AI

A powerful shift is underway in the global AI landscape and it’s being led by the Global South. At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) Science Summit, AI4PEP and its partners demonstrated how the region is not just participating in but pioneering the development of responsible, ethical, and inclusive artificial intelligence for healthcare.

A preprint publication, “Shifting from Margins to Momentum of the Global South Leadership in Responsible Artificial Intelligence Solutions for Health: Lessons from the UNGA79 Science Summit” co-authored by AI4PEP leaders and collaborators, captures the urgency, innovation, and transformative potential of this movement.

Redefining Global Health Leadership Through AI

Historically perceived as recipients of high-income countries’ technological solutions, Global South nations are now shaping the future of healthcare AI through context-sensitive, affordable, and scalable innovations. AI4PEP The Global South AI for Pandemic and Epidemic Preparedness and Response Network is a key catalyst in this transformation.

From AI-powered diagnostic tools in rural Ethiopia, to telehealth platforms in Indigenous communities in the Philippines, to AI systems for disease surveillance in Senegal, AI4PEP and its partners are delivering tools that resonate with real-world needs. These tools are not only effective but deeply rooted in local culture, geography, and systems, ensuring meaningful adoption and sustainability.

A Responsible Approach to Artificial Intelligence

What sets Global South initiatives apart is their firm commitment to responsible AI one that prioritizes transparency, inclusivity, and cultural relevance. The AI solutions presented at UNGA79 are built around the principles of:

  • Affordability and access for low-resource settings
  • Open-source technology to democratize innovation
  • Community-driven approaches that build trust and relevance
  • Collaborative knowledge-sharing between regions facing similar public health challenges

Global Partnerships, Decolonized Models

AI4PEP’s model for collaboration includes equitable partnerships with Global North funders and institutions, such as Canada’s IDRC, the UK’s FCDO, and other Northern research centers. These collaborations are purposefully structured to uplift local leadership and strengthen the Global South’s capacity to own and scale its digital health innovations.

Challenges Ahead, and a Global Call to Action

The article emphasizes continued challenges in data governance, regulatory policy, and infrastructure disparities. AI4PEP is addressing these by fostering robust frameworks and emphasizing digital inclusion. However, sustained investment, policy support, and global solidarity are needed to fully realize the equitable potential of AI in healthcare.

Lessons from the Frontlines

The innovations presented at UNGA79 offer valuable lessons for global health:

  • Innovation thrives in adversity: Resource constraints have driven powerful, adaptable AI solutions.
  • Partnerships matter: Cross-sector collaboration enables scale and long-term success.
  • Ethics and equity aren’t optional; they are foundational to trust, adoption, and real impact.

As AI4PEP continues to scale its efforts, its message is clear: responsible AI isn’t just possible from the Global South, it’s already happening.
