Harnessing AI for Cleaner Air: AI4PEP South Africa Teams Up with Evotel

The South African Consortium of Atmospheric Quality Monitoring Partners with Evotel to Enhance AI-Powered Air Quality Monitoring

In a significant stride towards improving public health and environmental monitoring, the South African Consortium of Atmospheric Quality Monitoring (SACAQM) team, part of the Global South AI for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (AI4PEP) initiative, has partnered with Evotel, a leading fibre network operator. This strategic partnership aims to leverage advanced AI-driven solutions to provide real-time environmental data that can support public health initiatives and policy development.

AI4PEP is dedicated to strengthening equitable and responsive public health systems by leveraging responsible AI solutions to enhance prevention, preparedness, and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks. This partnership with Evotel exemplifies AI4PEP’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology with public health initiatives, ensuring that high-quality environmental data is accessible to all.

The AI_R Technology

At the heart of this initiative is the AI_R air quality monitoring system, which offers an affordable and efficient way to track pollution levels in real time. These sensors are designed to capture data on pollutants and provide actionable insights that could help authorities identify high-risk areas and implement effective interventions. The technology is built to withstand diverse weather conditions and operates with minimal power consumption, making it an ideal solution for widespread deployment.

Evotel’s extensive fibre network infrastructure will play a crucial role in hosting and connecting the AI_R sensors across Gauteng. This collaboration ensures that the devices can operate seamlessly, delivering reliable data to environmental agencies and researchers. By combining AI4PEP’s technological expertise with Evotel’s robust infrastructure, the partnership is paving the way for more data-driven decision-making in air quality management.

Air pollution is a pressing issue in Gauteng, with rapid urbanization and industrial expansion contributing to deteriorating air quality. Poor air conditions pose significant health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. With real-time monitoring enabled by AI_R technology, communities will have better insights into pollution trends, leading to more targeted efforts to reduce exposure and protect public health.

Gauteng province faces growing air pollution challenges due to rapid urbanization and industrial activity. Poor air quality has severe health implications, particularly for vulnerable populations. By expanding the network of AI_R sensors, this partnership enables real-time monitoring to identify pollution hotspots and trends, empowering authorities and communities to take informed action. Evotel’s extensive network infrastructure ensures the seamless operation of these sensors, facilitating widespread deployment and efficient connectivity for data collection.

The collaboration between AI4PEP South Africa and Evotel represents a significant step forward in utilizing AI for public health and environmental monitoring. By making high-quality environmental data accessible, this partnership not only addresses current air quality issues but also sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at improving public health through technological innovation.

This initiative is supported by the Department of Science and Innovation, the National Research Foundation, iThemba LABS, and the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), in collaboration with the European Laboratory CERN. Through strategic partnerships like this, AI4PEP aims to create sustainable and scalable solutions that can be replicated in other regions across the Global South facing similar challenges.
